Supro S6420+ Thunderbolt Plus 1x15 combo
Supro Amps S6420+ Thunderbolt Plus
1x15” combo Tube Guitar Amplifier
35 /45 / 60 Watt Selectable Power
The legendary 1964 “Blue Rhino Hide” Supro Thunderbolt is renowned for its bold, full-range sound. Up-front, honest midrange - Some of the most amazing, raw tube distortion ever heard - Epic, overdriven and tooth-rattling! It has all you needed- Two knobs and the TRUTH. Now, thanks to Bruce Zinky and David Koltai, Supro is back! While a reissue of the original S6420 is available, it’s the new S6420+ amplifier that really gets our juices flowing. This “Plus” version of the amplifier adds a 3 way selector to the front panel for switchable output power. The Supro Thunderbolt Plus is selectable between 35-Watt “Class A” Cathode bias operation, as well as beefy 45-Watt and 60-Watt Grid bias modes for additional headroom and tonal variation.
Normal and Extra-hot input options, combined with a wide range of available gain on tap, allow you to fine-tune the texture and response of the Thunderbolt Plus for a massive sound. It has enough volume for larger venue and theatre stages, and puts complete control of the amp’s overdrive right into your guitar’s volume knob. The 35-Watt and 45-Watt modes both deliver the sag and bluster of the 5U4 tube rectifier while the 60-Watt mode uses a silicon rectifier to unleash maximum Thunderbolt power. Faster transient response and ample headroom in the 60-Watt mode also make for a perfect pedal platform.
This tube guitar amplifier is powered by a pair of 6L6 power tubes. Massive custom transformers and a lightweight, vintage-correct cabinet —combined with the best-sounding 15” guitar speaker money can buy—put the S6420+ Supro Thunderbolt Plus in a class of its own. With the amp turned all the way up, chords ring with exceptional clarity and definition, even amidst copious amounts of tube overdrive.
Supro's roots can be traced back to the Valco company which manufactured amps and guitars under a variety of brand names, including Airline, Oahu, National, Gretsch, Harmony, and Kay. It was during this time that Valco also began producing guitars and amplifiers under the Supro name. Extremely popular amongst Southside Chicago blues musicians in the 1960’s, Supro amplifiers proved equally popular with the British musicians who were influenced by them. By the late 1960’s, notable guitarists from Jimi Hendrix to Albert Lee to Jimmy Page could be seen playing their Supro amplifiers. Nowadays, original Supro amps are highly sought after and often sell for premium prices on the used market because of their legendary and unique tone.
